Re: LED Noise?
Frz, the "stars" argument has been made often enough elsewhere. Obviously the USCG and other regulatory bodies don't share your opinion about that.

There's no requirement for an anchor light to be that high up. Nor the VHF antenna

Re: LED Noise?
An anchor light does not need to be located at the mast head. And I have experienced almost running into a boat where the masthead light was masked by the stars and the hull was nearly invisible until we were very close to the boat.

So can a steaming light act as an anchor light?

I just has to be an all round light. Doesn't mean the mast can't obscure it slightly

Re: LED Noise?
Dave, unless your anchor light is WIDER than your mast, the mast will fully obscure it from some small angle of view, especially if you have a stout mast and one of the new slim anchor lights. So technically? Yes, the anchor light might very well have to be clear above the mast, unless you've got a fat anchor light. One point in favor of old kerosene lanterns.
"Its just a little obstruction" still counts as an obstruction.
Although I like the way the fishing fleets work. Nothing like a couple of huge "orange" sodium lights in the middle of nowhere to tip you off that there's a boat out there.

There is no legal requirement for an antenna to be up that high that I know of...
but I think that there is a practical requirement.

An antenna at spreader height would perform almost the same
Dave

Re: LED Noise?
Two lights, one on either side of the mast, at 1 meter distance from each other or less will show up as a single all around light for all intents and purposes.

Re: LED Noise?
Jim, I look at this as a marketing opportunity.
Just got back from the patent office, where I filed for exclusive rights on a donut-shaped anchor light, designed to fit over your masthead VHF antenna so it take less real estate and can't be obstructed.
Comes in honey-maple and jelly-filled flavors, too. <WEG>

Simply hoisting an all round light upto the rigging a bit , as was done with oil lamps , is sufficient
Dave

If an anchor light is regulated, if someone filed a complaint, I'd expect to find a similar barn-door-sized-loophole that came back to "so shut your anchor light".
An imperfect world, yes.

Yes, the world is imperfect, especially where bureaucracy is involved.
Some typical labeling text for part 15 compliance would be as follows:
"This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the condition that this device does not cause harmful interference."
At least that is the case according to the first web site that I punched up on the subject, which can be found here: https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/kdb/forms...27980&switch=P
Some other related references:
FCC Testing - FCC Certification Testing - FCC Compliance Testing | F2 Labs

Please interpret as you you see fit.

I agree that would be a workable height.
Do you have a suggestion for a workable mounting bracket that would be likely to hold up well under typical sailing conditions?

I think dockhead has mounted antennas on his spreaders
