Vieux Malin,

Leaving aside that impressive airline display. I think you are Fundementally confused about SSB. MarineSSB which needs a specific license called a LRC or the equivalent in Italy or France.

Marine SSB will give you safety( GMDSS etc) and pactor and hence gribs etc. you have no need to get into amateur radio for that.

Thanks Dave, I find this more productive.
However, that radio is what I've got...and my concerned (in this thread) was how to set up the damn thing.

Somebody answered accordingly, and I will take suggestions about this. All the rest, right or wrong, is rubbish out of topic. If I opened a thread talking about apples, why the hell we are talking about coconuts ?

Fair winds and happy winter solstice to you too.

Ben

Sailmail is actually on the marine ssb bands, not ham. Much to learn

Lot of good info here if you want to make a start learning, there will be some antenna stuff in there somewhere.

He is on Facebook now, trying to get every penny from the faithful. As for his license, I've checked...it expired 2000+ years ago!

Re: Ham Radio in a Ketch

Hi VieuxMalin,

My boat is moored in the North Sea Channel (Zeebrugge, Belgium) so the Med is quite far away....

Although I have chartered twice in the Med (Greece and Turkey).

If you have trouble finding an affordable professional, and if you are in a location easily reachable by low-cost flight, don't hesitate. I like these kind of work and would do it for free, just for the fun.

Good luck, good sailing,

Jan

I am confused -- I thought that many marine SSB's will work on ham bands with little or no modification, like the ubiquitous Icom M802, for example. I have been told that M802's make fairly crude ham rigs, but isn't it legal to use them for both marine SSB and amateur radio if you have all the necessary licenses (marine station license, marine long range operator's license, ham ticket)?

There was a big long thread on this not so long ago, and iirc if you turn on the ham bands technically, having been 'tampered with' , your radio is no longer type approved and not legal as a marine ssb anymore. Not that that anyone in the real world would know the difference.

Hmm, I'll look in the archives, but if it's "tampering", then isn't it a simple question of whether or not the marine SSB radio is capable of doing ham bands out of the box, or is designed to do them? If the M802 is delivered with the capability, then who's "tampering"? Then no one touches the SSB capabilities in order to also use the radio as a licensed amateur.

Re: Ham Radio in a Ketch

I recall it is the other way around: The popular Marine SSB transceivers work on all bands out of the box. It is the comparable Ham transceivers that are sometimes tampered with so as to work on the Marine bands. The problem is that Ham transceivers have no need for the tight frequency control to accomplish the channelization required of a Marine SSB. A Marine SSB will have a fancy oscillator. Presumably a ham operator can fiddle with the frequency knob.
