Does modern sailboat radar distinguish storms/squalls approaching or receding?

Does modern sailboat radar (e.g. Raymarine/B&G on a 40ft boat) distinguish storms/squalls approaching or receding on screen? Or does one need to watch the screen and determine the track of a storm squall against the range rings?

If you have a Doppler radar then YES, those will use red or green to show the motion. Same coding applies to boats and other moving objects.

There is a difference between Sailboat Radar and Power Boat Radar?

Only in the sense that you won't see a big open array on a sailboat like you sometimes do on a powerboat. But in the world of 24" and smaller domes, they're the same.

Yes. We have RayMarine and the radar shows advancing as red, retreating as green and stationary as grey. This is true when using doppler radar and range is set to 6 miles or less.

Also retired on a Catalina 470 (Hull #168).

Re: Does modern sailboat radar distinguish storms/squalls approaching or receding?

I have Garmin Doppler radar and its ability to read approaching squalls and fronts is exceptional. In “active” weather offshore I use it to help determine intensity and guide me out of the path of approaching squalls when possible. It’s a great tool for an aging singlehander.
