CruzPro GD20 Propane Alarm

We have been trying to upgrade our propane system. We have the new hose, solenoid, wires, and just need to connect one more hose, two more wires and install ~8 bolts. Yesterday, we finished wiring the CruzPro Propane Alarm and control to the electrical system and decided to give it a try while we know that there cannot possibly be any propane in the boat. It's default mode seems pretty loud. We expect that from the alarm, but is it supposed to make a significant buzz?! We had planned on leaving the alarm connected all the time when we move onboard and use it as the solenoid control and only turn off at the switch when we leave the boat. Now we are wondering if this buzzing sound is going to drive us crazy while we are cooking. We chose what seemed like a great location: near the stove, at about shoulder level as a good "slap that thing off" location. This is also very near your ear when cooking. We ran a systems test and it passed, but we are wondering if this noise is an indication that something is wrong.

Re: CruzPro GD20 Propane Alarm

Your ‘buzzing’ seems problematic [abnormal], to me.
From the manual:

“... Normal Operation:
When the power is applied tothe GD20B Gas Vapor Monitor, you will hear twoshort beeps and the red "Wait" light will go on.After 45 seconds, the wait light should go out and the green "Safe" light will go on if the gas concentration is at safe levels...

... Gas Vapor Alarm:
If gas concentrations reachthe alarm level, the "Safe" light will go out, the red"Alarm" light will blink and the built-in 85 dBalarm buzzer will sound. If the LPG solenoid wasON, the GD20B will turn it off automatically. The alarm will continue to sound until the gasconcentration falls below the detection thresholdor you disable the alarm by pressing the "Test"button. If you disable the alarm, it will automati-cally re-arm when the gas concentration dropsbelow the threshold level. When the gas concentrations drops below thealarm threshold, the alarm will silence but theAlarm light will continue to blink briefly once persecond to tell you the alarm had gone off. Pressingthe "Test" button (after the gas concentration hasdropped) will turn off the blinking Alarm light...”

Seastory,
Having a propane alarm is a good idea however, please check the appropriateness of your location. Propane is heavier than air so I believe the sensor should be low in the boat to be most effective.

This is an alarm and solenoid control on the wall, the sensor itself is below the stove, but above the bilge.

Re: CruzPro GD20 Propane Alarm

I'd email Cruzpro. They were very prompt when I had questions and, in my experience, stand by their products.
