Exactly. Use the tablet at the nav station below, the MFD at the helm.

However not sure about the OPs problem with his shifter hitting the MFD.

The MFD needs to be visible from the helm with a robust remote. So bulkhead mounted with a remote at the helm would work.
Lol Snore....I always thought Navigation was all about nitpicking. [emoji6]
I brought up the MFD distinction because that is the major advantage of the latest devices where all key components from engine vitals, bildge integrity, wind, depth and radar can be brought to the key piloting station, in an emergency.
No distractions, no running below to check when the torrential rain is horizontal and you are trying to save the boat!
Yes, an extreme example, but that is what we plan for as skippers.

My 15" MFD cockpit console is all weather and provides good enough discrimination within the smallest foitprint, that still allows space for independent instrument backup .

Re: Chart plotter location

MFD or Multifunction display could be anything and may or may not plot charts. According to Maretron this is a multifunction display.

However a chartplotter always plots charts.

Of course you can call it whatever you want. My wife calls them the big chart screen and the little chart screen. My grandson refers to it as "this thing" as in "There are no games on this thing" or "How do you get online with this thing".

Re: Chart plotter location

Mine is mounted just inside the companion way near the nav station on one of those West Marine aluminum hinge swing out devices. I can see it at the nav desk or swing it out and view it from the helm.
