James, it look like the phone you have is a Hughes 7101. Should work perfectly fine after putting a SIM card in. The only biggest problem with Thuraya phones is usally coverage, which is somewhat limited. So it all goes to where is it meant to be used.

if you are still looking for a phone, we have a globalstar you are welcome to borrow if you can get it to work. We're cruising UK and France this year and won't need it.

Wow. I'm sure the 10 or so pirates armed with AK-47's will be real impressed with an unshaven fellow with a knife and a pistol.
