B&G Vulcan 7 with Simrad Forward Scan Problem

Hi,
Just had the first test run With my new B&G Vulcan 7 with Forward Scan transducer as my only depth sounder.
Ten miles into the voyage and the depth reads 3 dashes and nothing else........
Wonderful.
Have I done the wrong thing by thinking this transducer will do both tasks ?
It was not the cheapest option, but I wanted to be able to see forward when anchoring.
And to have a reliable depth sounder for normal sailing.
Doug.
