I will be wanting the ais overlay on the radar.
I can state categorically that you can connect the 2150 to the hds 5 and 7 via serial, as i am doing so right now. I get ais targets on the chart, and the vhf receives GPS data from the hds.

Lowrance told me this isn't possible, and that i have to have nmea2000, too.

However, for Ais targets superimposed over radar, i can't say. But i sure suspect that lowrance might be wrong.

why do you have to change from 5x to 5m? They have the same functionality and the 5x will work fine. Edit : I see, looks like the 5x doesn't support radar.

Re: Anyone Tried VHF/AIS Radio?

the 5x didn't take in gps data i guess it's only a depth sounder. I was able to add radar but not my other nmea data. The other nmea data might be a problem for the 0183 and maybe that will need the 2k. I hope to know that today.

Re: Anyone Tried VHF/AIS Radio?

If you go to the SH website, open the AIS plus page, then click on files, there is a PDF on connecting the 2150 and HDS5m. This is the one to follow, it supercedes the info in the manuals.

I can testify that following any other info like that in the manuals can result in frustration!!

Re: Anyone Tried VHF/AIS Radio?

Well, to be on topic, I got the 2150 ais data on to the computer and the hds5 no problem with nmea 0183. The only data that I want and am missing right now is the rudder data. The other wierd thing about this device is it doesn't use the 0183 heading data for the radar info and won't give you MARPA data till it sees heading I guess through the nmea 2k sentencing.
