AIS w/ Navionics on iPad

For the last several years we’ve been using a Furuno Fa-50 AIS receiver-transmitter coupled to our Furuno Navnet radar/chart plotter. I have recently started using the Navionics chart system on my iPad because it’s just so handy in the cockpit. Our Furuno rig is all below. I’ve recently started wondering about using an AIS receiver with my iPad to display targets. Navionics mentions several receivers, but I’m not getting just what ( if any) else is necessary for a receiver and the iPad to start hand-shaking.

Where do I get started on this?

Re: AIS w/ Navionics on iPad

you could Lilkly buy a wifi gateway that will send the fa-50 data out to the ipad.

otherwise you replace the ais with a wifi ready ais like a vesper but that'll be $1000

I’m not interested in replacing the Furuno- it transmits data just fine. I’m looking for something to receive targets and display them on my iPad via Navionics.

Any of the popular NMEA to wifi gateways (Yacht Devices, Actisense etc.) will work to get an existing AIS working with Navionics.

Re: AIS w/ Navionics on iPad

Compared to the accuracy and functionality of AIS on the Furuno, Navionics sucks. There are multiple false signals of non-existent targets, targets flashing and disappearing at random times and slow response compared to the Furuno. Don’t bother......

You need to put a Furuno station at your upper helm. I have my iPads connected to my Vesper for AIS data and I much prefer the Furuno, especially the CPA and target line features.

We went with the Quark QK-A027, which has some extra features we needed but you won’t need, like Seatalk to NMEA. It has a wifi transmitter built in so just tell your iPad to listen to it, and viola. We use our iPad constantly in the cockpit, with Navionics. Seems to work well in fresh water :-)
