In defense of Tom Perkins, the Maltese Falcons previous owner, his venture capitalist firm provided capital to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who started businesses including Amazon and Google that provide goods and services that we use quite often. These businesses make for a better society and create jobs. Without risking capital, most of these businesses would not exist. Putting capital at risk is only worthwhile if there is also a potential for reward.
