Making smaller size cabin cushions

I was watching a youtube video about living on a canal boat in the UK.
The first thing this guy did was take the long cabin cushions and cut them into smaller sections.
He was going to make new cushions anyways because they were old so there was no extra expense in making them smaller.

This way it is much easier to remove a cushion to get to the storage under.

I like it and will be putting it on my ever growing todo list.

Has anyone else done this?

I just assumed that was normal ... my bunk cushions are divided in two asymmetrically: the long half covers a water tank, and the short half covers a locker ... I'm forever flipping up the cushions to get at the lockers.

Sure!

Like Kelkara, I sized mine so I could get to lockers with minimal fuss.

Downside is possibly sleeping on the smaller cut up cushions.
Not sure if you sleep on said cushions, but we like slightly larger cushions/less breaks.

Good point I do sleep on these cushions.
If this becomes an issue I will just put my camping air mattress on top.

Small egg crate/roll out topper also helps out.

Re: Making smaller size cabin cushions

When I made my cushions (used the excellent how-to videos from Sailrite), I made the bases in one piece, but the backs in two pieces.

Thus it's easy to reach my storage (which is behind the seat backs), but sleeping is still comfortable.

If I did it again, I might do the backs in 3 pieces. Of course, it's then more work.

Re: Making smaller size cabin cushions

In the cockpit we have full length cushions attached to the large lazzerette covers, the cover has a piston to aid in lifting.
In our salon there are a ton of segmented cushions, we use altered fitted sheets to hold them in place when converted to a sea birth with lee cloth. My opinion on smaller cushions outside is that the smaller they are the lighter, and I think there’s a hire chance of taking flight.
I have made all of them with sunbrella fabric, sailbag, dodger, Bimini, cockpit cushions etc.

Cut the cushion and dry fit the foam hole, then cut into segments if you want to get a perfect fit.
