Herreshoff/Vaitses Meadowlark

So, I pulled the trigger.

I'm the new owner of a 1978 Hereshoff/Vaitses Meadowlark, "Curlew".

A 37-foot shoal-draft ketch with leeboards.

Boards up she'll float in a heavy dew (well, almost, she draws 20 inches).

And with her 8-foot beam she's trailerable without permits. (And the sale included a custom-built trailer that needs new tires, but is otherwise in fine shape.)

She's on the hard until spring.

Re: Herreshoff/Vaitses Meadowlark

Congratulations!

During the 8 years I owned our '87 Vaitses 37' "Bay L'Ark" The biggest recurring problem was spotty deck plywood rot due to pinholes in the glass covering. With no headliner, I just excavated the rot from below to clean margins and filled with epoxy/mat glass, and finished with white epoxy filler. Most often around openings, esp. companionway slides.

I built the shelf/seatback cabinetry from 1x8 poplar for angled backrest, and 1/4" ply shelf cut to hull curve, set on quarter-round against the hull, and routed slot in the back of the 1x8, with several 1x6 dividers to stabilize it.

Re: Herreshoff/Vaitses Meadowlark

The surveyor found no rot, and I've seen none.

The interior needs work.

Have fun! Note the real, Hereshoff designed ports that open by tilting in at the tops. Cool.

They don't tilt.

Or, rather, they do, but there are no hinges. It's just loose sheets of plexiglass, with wooden wedges to hold them in place either closed or ajar. Or replaced with screens.
