Question: Purchasing Dinghy Engine in the Bahamas

I was planning on purchasing a 15 hp 2 cycle Yamaha in the Abaco's but a fellow sailor here said that the Bahamas just put a 45% surcharge on all products in the Islands.

Does this extend to engines which till now had been exempt as they were used for their industry?

Any good info would be appreciated

Thanks

I haven't heard of any surcharge on all products. Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with the surcharge on boat parts imported by cruisers?

Bahamas Tariffs, Duties, and Import Taxes

The standard ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 35%, but a many items have their own duty rates*.
The Bahamas government also charges a 7% "stamp tax" on most imports.

* I believe that the rate for outboard motors is 17%.

According to the Prime Minister:
“... There are no new taxes and no increases in taxes in the 2007/08 budget, and the Government indicated plans to cut some existing taxes ...”

You could contact Abaco Outboard Engines Ltd (Marsh Habour), or any outboard dealer, for a quotation:

Thanks, Contacted them yesterday

I called them yesterday and resevered exactly what I wanted and a good end price. There doesn't seem to be any excessive price surcharge on engines.

Dave: Would you mind sharing what you selected, and how much it will cost?
