HIN on licence and boat don't match on sailboat we're about to buy

Could you call your friendly troopers and ask whether the boat's id shows it as being stolen?

I had the exact same problem on my last purchase. A "G" in the HIN had been copied as "6". I did a tracing and the probate judge fixed it on the bill of sale and issued new papers with the correct numbers. It took about 10 minutes( but I know the PJ ).

I would be much less concerned about that kind of error but I would still put it on the seller to fix it.

I have never heard of a broker who checked the HIN or even looked at the boat registration before it was sold.


Why can't things remain where i carelessly left them?

When I bought my current boat, the broker left a digit out of the HIN on the Bill of Sale and I had to get it re-done. With the missing digit, it was clearly invalid but he didn't pick it up.

We backed out because of the HIN issue, and he was trying to rush us and we wouldn't have had time to get a survey done. It didn't feel right.

We're not in a hurry, so have decided to be patient and wait.
