Any Recommended Brokers for a $30 - $40k Boat in the Toronto Area ?
Hi,
Next spring we will be starting our quest for the perfect Liveaboard/ Cruiser. There are a LOT of brokers out there, but most seem much more interested in brokering boats with value above $100k. Can anyone recommend a broker (& surveyor for that matter) who will give us the time and attention we feel our quest deserves?

You are in Toronto? Where are you planning on purchasing? For example are you buying a boat in Toronto? Florida? Bahamas? Central or South America?

We would prefer buying in Ontario or Quebec for obvious reasons, but I would consider importing if the cost was justified. So, I guess the real answer is anywhere on the Great Lakes.

Try boatforsale.org and seriously, look as guests at the cork boards and the online "4 Sail" ads in all the GTA clubs. Especially at summer's end, there are lots of people getting rid of decent boats at cheap (or can be MADE cheap) prices.
As for surveyors, I've used Peter McGuire of Fastnet and Bill Provis of MacLaren with satisfaction.

Quite the little boat.
She is a bit smaller than I would like (I'm a big guy), and I'm not ready to buy until next spring at the absolute earliest, and will probably wait until the end of next season to take advantage of end of season pricing, (although it is going to KILL ME to loose another summer) but I can surely appreciate the work, and attention to detail that it took to refit her. Kudos to the owner.
I'm sure she will make a wonderful cruiser for a young couple to see the world. But I am happy to see that there are boats well within my price range that are fully outfitted, and seaworthy. Thanks for the link.

Thanks, I'll keep looking, and learning. I think I wearing out yachtworld.com
As for your suggestions of Peter McGuire and Bill Provis, for surveys. Firstly, thank you for the names. And are they based in Toronto?

Look at what yachts a brokerage has for sale. If some of their listings are in your range I think they would help you? And they should know and probably have seen all the comps which might help.

So you would suggest find the boat 1st and that'll lead you to the right broker. Good advise.

Yes. McGuire is with Fastnet and Provis is with McLaren's, I believe.

Frankly, if you were a prick in this small a market, word would get around quickly.

I'll second Bill Provis as a surveyor. He just did my 25 foot sloop a month ago.

Try Al Parell at Freeman Eckley yachts in Vermillion, Ohio. We have worked with him in the past, ( both buying and selling) and he has done a great job for us. Al will go the extra mile for you and works to build long term relationships with his customers. He even showed us the marina that we wound up in, and introduced us to most of the boaters on "E" dock.
