Thumbs up Re: Suggestions for good sailing fiction

Once a friend gave me the book "The Boat" and this is generally the only book that I have read that was about the marine theme, mostly I read detective stories. I love to watch the vlogs of people who travel the world by boat)

Try “Deep Waters” it’s an anthology of water-based mystery stories. It’s compiled by Martin Edwards.

Re: Suggestions for good sailing fiction

I enjoyed every series about the British Navy in the age of fighting sail. Each series has lots of books.

Hornblower books by C S Forrester

Ramage books by Dudley Pope

Alan Lewrie Books by Dewey Lambdin

Aubrey/Maturin books By Patrick O'Brian

Another great read is The Sea Will Tell by Vincent Bugliosi (true crime).

I happen to be re-reading that right now! Great book by a great author. Not really all about sailing, although there is sailing in it.

Passage Juneau, by Jonathan Raban
Nonfiction. Relays the story of the author following Capt. Vancouver through the inside passage. Wonderful insights into the old mariner's state of mind as he headed north naming everything in sight. Great writing.

Re: Suggestions for good sailing fiction

a book which is long time out of print is "The Bird of Dawning" by john masefield

(NB : he wrote 'Sea Fever'

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking"

so this will give you an idea of the quality of the yarn

it's well worth hunting for a copy. i got one of ebay long time ago and it's one of my most treasured possession

cheers,

Didn't he plagiarise the Spike Milligan original

I left my shoes and socks there – I wonder if they're dry?

Met spike's mum on a flight once, not hard to see where his sense of humour came from. Delightful old girl with a wonderful sense of the ridiculous.

cheers,

Re: Suggestions for good sailing fiction

Thought I'd mention Jim Lynch's Book ‘Before the Wind’ again.

It's a great book and besides the main story line has all the stuff we see here on CF since I believe the character Josh is the one that works at a marina.

Based in Seattle, you have the liveaboards whose boats never move and probably shouldn't anyway, the beginners that have bought an old Catalina 27 to fix up and sail to Alaska, and the racers plus a large cast of characters that seem to be at the marina
