Re: Starlink

I have the $2,500 antenna, and I pay $250 a month for 50 GB plus $2 a GB over that. We just crossed from Ensenada to the Marquesas, and that month cost me $472. But I had a happy wife and crew who could play on their phones all night on watch. They let me sleep 10 to 6 every night, so it was worth it.

All good numbers Capt. Thanks for the live info.

Blessings and fair winds.

Re: Starlink

Does anybody have any experience with Starlink in Europe? What Starlink package is available if you are sailing around Europe?

Re: Starlink

Again, the question is where was the Starlink purchased? If in the Americas, your options in Europe are limited and you'll be paying a lot for data. If purchased in Europe, you have a similar roaming plan to the USA. But the Starlink needs to be delivered to that address on record.

We have the regional roam for Europe at 59€ / month. The regular v2 Dishy cost us 300€, and the pushpit mount was another 50€. When we go offshore we enable premium data for that time - weather and some other stuff came to 0.2 GB (at 2.30€/GB) on our last passage across the Baltic.

We don't have the power budget to keep the Starlink on all the time, so we do a daily "internet hour".

Re: Starlink

[QUOTE=FlyingScot;3889203]Per the page you linked, Mobile Regional is $150 USD/month.

In Panama it is $64 USD/month. Land is defined as in the land hexagons. It doesn't legally mean on land only.

It also has the ability to work great when you leave the hexagon. When it stops working, you open the app, toggle on "priority data" and it typically starts working within 3-10 minutes. Of course you pay extra for this feature. Panama plan is $2.14/GB. Well worth it to have offshore.

I care not what the ToS say as I have never read them fully and don't intent do.

When you apply for SL in Panama it will ask you for an ID number. I just used my US Passport number without any issues.

Question. Did you apply for this while you were in Panama or from another country?

I was physically in Panama when I swapped the system over. I'm not sure it matters though as long as you are within the area of the plan.

You really need to. Starlink has a history of not enforcing the TOS, until they do. They also recently changed the availability map to no longer use hexagons, which could hint that service may soon not work "close to shore." And there are beginning to be reports on FB of users that have their service deactivated while offshore with a standard dish. When opening a ticket to find out why, they are told that the standard dish isn't for offshore and if they want to continue using offshore they need a maritime dish for $2500.

Par for the course for Starlink. If you read and abide by the TOS, none of this would be a surprise or affect you.

Following the ToS is much of a guarantee either. EVERYONE is on a month by month contract. Things change and you would only have until the end of your monthly contract before you would be affected as well.

I'll stick to the cheap hardware and continue to use it until it's no longer valid. I surely don't want a $2500 dish that consumes double the power.

We keep a unlimited plan Garmin InReach as backup and will continue to do so.
