I am going to try the steerman, invented by rob chicken. looks like a fine piece of enginering.

Bet it will not work on most boats. If the boat is well balanced on all points of sail and requires limited rudder travel to maintain a heading, it will probably be fine. Those boats that develop strong helm will be another story. Looking at the diagram of the attachment to the wheel, the limited amount of wheel travel by attaching the line to a wheel spoke just isn't enough movement.
