Implies it's on all phones. Interesting that it's not on the non-contract phones.

Well, it says that the carrier can activate it for you... which obviously never works when you pop in a prepaid SIM. The carriers here do 't care how you use up your data.... so I guess I'll contact Apple anyway to report this.

ciao!
Nick.

I have iPhone v4ios (phone problem cant install latest os)
I have ipad 1 wifi no 3g ios 5.01

I just did this test

On ipad turn off wifi (i am in a wifi zone and for test want to eliminate that as a source if you have 3g ipad you should turn thatnoff so the only data option is the tether)
On ipad Go to settings - wifi - off
On ipad go to Settings general 3g/data roaming off
On ipad go to settings-general-bluetooth-bluetooth on
On iphone go to settings-general-bluetooth-bluetooth on
On the ipad go to settings-general-bluetooth (your phone should be listed)
On the iphone go to settings-genal-bluetooth (your ipad should be listed)
On the ipad select the iphone - it should ask on both devices XYZ would you like to pair - select allow
Both devices should grind a bit and show "connected" - if it doesn't I have had to do a warm shutdown on both devices in the past
On the iphone go to settings-general-network-select internet tethering on
I had to wait about a minute or two and then on the top left of the ipad screen where it says "iPad" the are two concentric circles indicating the tether is on.

I am posting this post and downloading google maps right now via the tethered phone. Its way slow and way expensive but it works and on differrent ios's to boot.

Hope this works for someone else...

It's as good program in many ways but this is poor.
When using iNavX, If you triple tap the screen, you will get the distance and bearing to your location. My iPad is currently 129 nm from my boat. How did I find out about this, you ask? Well, it's a touch screen and if you accidentally touch the screen right, you some times learn something new.

Re: Ipad Apps for Boaters

Triple tapping is actually the same gesture as double tapping the chart to start the measure tool then single tapping the origin (green circle) to have bearing/distance track with the device position.

Both of my devices have been searching for a Bluetooth connection for more than 10 mins now. Do I need to have something activated with AT&T to get this to work?

iPhone & iPad2 wifi+3G both v 5.0.1

Bluetooth requires nothing to be active.

The warm reboot I referred to is an option to try

Hold the off button (the end where the headphone jack is) until you see a slider that says "power off"

Wait for the ipad to shut down. Then hold the same button for a couple seconds. When it boots you will see the apple logo for about 30 seconds before it goes to home screen.

Also try shutting down all apps not in use. Double tap the home button. You will see a row of apps at the bottom. Hold on one of the apps until they jiggle (like when you arrange icons). Then each app will have a red x. Hitting the red x shuts the app down.

I am no ios expert at all but shutting down apps frees memory. Shouldnt need to do it but it doesnt hurt and has worked for me.

Re: Ipad Apps for Boaters

This is a true story. A couple weeks ago I helped a friend move his sailboat to Two Way marina near Darien, Georgia for some minor repairs he wanted done. On the way the chartplotter failed in the ICW and the entrance up the river/creek to the marina is very shallow in places and not well marked. I pulled out my iPad with Charts, the GPS picked up the location ASAP. Wow. here was the chart to get us to the marina. ActiveCaptain has good products. I downloaded DragQueen, but haven't used it yet.

BBC News - Orangutans 'could video chat' between zoos via iPads

cheers,
Nick.

Can someone give me advice... I have an ipad2, wifi edition, with a bad elf GPS and an navionics app. Do I need a map cache app when i'm off shore to see maps? I will be heading out from St Martin for 2 weeks traveling down to Antigua. Any and all advice is most welcomed

Cheers

With Navionics you download detail maps while you are in good wifi and they are permanently stored on your device. Hit the setup ocon (looks like a gear) then download maps. You drag and drop areas. I usually shoot for 20 megabyte sections.
