Georgian Bay in June!

I am thinking of sailing into Georgian Bay on my trip from Port Huron to Chicago in June. I would appreciate any information on difficulties navigating in that area.

Can you be more specific in your question Rice? Georgian Bay is a big place. Are you going to cruise off-shore, or explore the coasts? Planning to go into the North Channel?

The eastern shore is known as the 10,000 islands area. There are tons of little islands everywhere, and they all look the same ... that's an exaggeration of course, but there are lots of gently sloping rock islands that do tend to look similar. Careful navigation is important.

Re: Georgian Bay in June!

The biggest navigation hazard there in June is limited visibility due to black flies.

You can find information in three long, detailed, illustrated cruise narratives I have written based on three recent visits to Georgian Bay. See

Georgian Bay Cruise 2001

Georgian Bay 2009

Georgian Bay 2011

If you read the narratives you will see among the several hundred color images some that will show:

--six-foot breaking seas in shoal offshore portions of the small craft route

--boats with the lower units of their outboard engines torn off from hitting solid rock

--crew wearing heavy jackets, caps, and scarves in late July on a sunny day.

You will also find plenty of details about harbors, marinas, restaurants, fuel docks, fuel prices, and the weather.
