Re: Cost of world charts- how do you do it?!

Simon..

And doīnt forget the free and easy way to construct your own navigable .kap charts using Paulīs great Google Earth conversion program GE2KAP. VERY useful in close up areas where you do not have any charts.

OK,they do not include soundings or sea markers but you get a good idea from the details of the map where also shallow water and rocks usually are visible.

Google Earth views are updated at fairly regular intervals as can be seen from the date at the bottom of the display.

See attached combination of GE and CM93 and the GE only detailed chart.

Re: Cost of world charts- how do you do it?!

Some form of severe speed limiting is necessary to copy Noonsite.com these days. I used to regularly update my local version with SiteSucker (a free Mac program) but these days they shut down the transfer very quickly. SiteSucker doesn't seem to have a speed limit adjustment, so I'll have to look around for a separate Mac app. I did find the local copy of Noonsite very useful (and shared it with a number of other cruisers).

If you travel to northern Europe you will find all of the chartlets needed, plus a lot of other useful information, in Reeds Nautical Almanac. It is a must-have, and eliminates the need for a pile of charts. Also, the Imray charts in Europe and the Caribbean are a better buy than government charts; they include chartlets inset on the small scale charts and require relatively few charts to cover a large area, A bonus is that they are printed on waterproof paper.
