Closing "Mr GO"

Press announcement from the US Army Corps of Engineers says that they now recommend building a dam to close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet canal (aka Mr GO). Seems that this waterway made the effects of Katrina much worse.

While I'm sure the barge operators won't like it, IMO it's an ugly muddy ditch that I would avoid.

Gives you an excuse for that extra 50 miles of "outside" sailing anyway.

I lived down there and worked dredging jobs in the MRGO (not Mr GO) for several years . Most pronounced it the Margo or just called it the Outlet. I was on a crewboat there once, and in 12ft seas the window in front of the captain caved in. Talk about fun.

I can understand how closing it would help protect the NO area. that canal is a direct shot from the gulf into the lower parts of the city. St. Bernard Parish and the Ninth ward where the canal ends. Alot of ships and barges uses that canal as well as NASA. The facility that builds the big orange fuel tank for the Shuttle is there. That is one reason the canal was built in the first place. Originally the Saturn V boosters also went thru there I believe.

I will be interested in followintg this story, do you have a link to the announcement

I saw this in the newspaper - AP article here: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...MPLATE=DEFAULT

Army Corps of Engineers website has nothing but old press releases.

This site I also found interresting - seems there has been an effort to close MrGO for some time now...
