Boat delivery

I’m in the process of purchasing a sailboat in St. Mary’s Georgia and want to bring it back to Toledo OH. What’s the quickest route and how long will it take? I know I’ll have to take the mast down, should I do it before I leave and just put the throttle down, or will I be able to sail some if I’m on the inside for most of the trip.

Re: Boat delivery

It would be helpful to know your boat type, its length and draft, both water and air (that's the depth of the keel and height of her mast).

Generally, you would go up the ICW to Southern New Jersey (to the termination point of the ICW near Cape May). The best two places for sailing being Pamlico Sound and the Chesapeake. Then short outside hop to New York Harbour, then Hudson River to Troy, NY, then Erie Canal (if you haven't pulled your mast before Troy, NY, you absolutely must do it at Troy for transit of the Erie Canal). Please note: This is a VERY general overview! Do your homework.

Here's a blog that has some helpful diagrams so you can see an illustration of the route:

Here's a recent thread with many helpful suggestions:

In this case, it was a 30' steel folkboat not restricted by either drafts (neither keel nor mast)...

Fair winds,
