Sizing Chain to Windlass Chainwheel

I recently purchased a used vertical Maxwell 1200 windlass. The chainwheel (gypsy) looks to be in fine shape so I wanted to order chain to fit. How do I specify the correct size chain for a particular chainwheel? Is it possible to measure specific features on the gypsy itself, or does a gypsy usually have any marks indicating proper size chain?

Re: sizing chain to windlass chainwheel

some have the chain size stamped on the inner/outer rim, others reccomend using 2ft of chain to acertain the correct link size and diameter.

might be a good idea to take the gypsy drum off and visit a chandeler with it! as even std 10mm chain comes in 2 different link sizes!

Re: sizing chain to windlass chainwheel

Had the same problem with my Lewmar. I have 10mm chain and the option of ISO or DIN chain. The gypsy had a number on it which appeared to be irrelevant, but by looking at the manufacturers specifications I was able to establish which type of chain.

Jimmy Green is a UK supplier of rope and chain and before I contacted the windlass manufacturer, asked that I measure a 20 link length of chain in order to establish exactly which one.
