New Lewmar windlass - rope just keeps slipping VIDEO

Hello,

I have a brand new Lewmar anchor winch that is unable to retrieve the rope. When released, the rope comes out fine, but as soon as there is resistance, the wheel that is supposed to pull in the rope slips. Maritim, where I bought it, said that I need to tighten the bolts in front, but it is already tight.

They meant tighten the clutch. Read the manual. It is normally done with winch handle on the head right next to the gypsy. Do not over tighten; it is there for a reason.

BTW, that is a windlass, not a winch. Might help you find the manual on-line.

Do you have the rope that's specified for the windlass? That's essential.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Fjoslukt.

To tighten the windlass clutch, consult the owner’s manual* for your specific windlass.
On a vertical windlass, there is typically a star-shaped socket that will accept a winch handle that can be used to tighten or loosen the clutch. Be sure to consult the owner’s manual* however, as sometimes these clutch adjustments are left-hand threads that can be broken if they are cranked in the wrong direction.
On a horizontal windlass, the clutch adjustment is usually a wingnut or screw at the end of the shaft that can be tightened or loosened.
