Re: McMurray Windlass info

Steve
I am interested in the McMurray Windlass PDF, please send it to me at pbsurf2@att.net. I'm very happy with the 1972 Grand Banks 42' classic I purchased 6 months ago. Really looking forward to getting the windlass working so I can anchor without the hassle of pulling it up by hand. Noticed the commuter area has significant grooves worn in by the brushes. Have been told it needs to be refinished by a lathe. Thanks for the help. Chris

Hi Steve - I've just had my motor serviced, but as I was reassembling it, it appears that one of the clutch plates is cracked. I have been unable to find anyone who knows what type of material they're made of (probably asbestos!) or what might work as a substitute. Could you send me that PDF file please? Maybe there is some more info there and it would certainly be a good resource to have. My email address is dave@davetraynor.com.

Many thanks,
Dave

Re: McMurray Windlass dismantle procedure

So to remove the motor, you must disassemble the entire windless? That seems excessive.

Re: McMurray Windlass dismantle procedure

My McMurray is a model 608, that's the only number I can find. Your disassemble instructions may be different. Have you seen one like mine?
The motor needs a rebuild, maybe a new one. Can you help me with removing the motor?

Re: McMurray Windlass info

I have replaced the motor on my McMurray windlass with a new Ford starting motor After reassembly gear oil leaks into the motor from the windlass. The "0" ring on the motor shaft does not seem to seal the motor. What am I doing wrong? I have made several attempts to stop the leak by adding a washer on the shaft next to the "0" ring thus creating more tension. Nothing has worked. If anyone has any expericence rebuilding this windlass I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, does anyone have the manual (PDF file) for this windlass that they could email me?

Thanks,
Tom Magwire

Re: McMurray Windlass info

Thank you very much for sharing the file on the McMurray windlass. It appears that I may have been overfilling with oil. I will try removing some oil and see if I still have a leak.
Thanks again,
Tom Magwire

Re: McMurray Windlass info

One more question for anyone who has rebuilt their McMurray windlass. The schematic shows a 3" o-ring on the motor shaft between the motor and windlass. There is no groove for the o-ring to sit in. What is it's purpose? Is Permatex # 2 adequate between the plates?

Thanks.
