OK - but there is no anchor buoy to interfere with others anchoring. Anyone who set an anchor buoy in Montague Harbour during the August long weekend would be profoundly unpopular. I might see a use if EVERYONE was stern-to, but that is also rare.

Sure, that's probably the most common way to rig a trip line. I prefer a float for the reasons stated earlier. Like all things boating, you must decide when it is or isn't appropriate to use. Personally, I'm not trying to win any popularity contests. Much more concerned with preventing others from dropping the hook right next to me in an open anchorage, drives me nuts.

I hear you. Drives me nuts too.
Problem is... anyone sailing into an anchorage who can't tell by how the boats are laying where their anchors probably are, won't pay attention to a float either.

Ever dinghy through the harbor at night? Little anchor floats aren't very visible in the dark, and there always seems to be somebody on a big boat who comes in after dark too. One of the more common scenarios is someone drops the hook up to windward of you and winds up your trip line while backing down on their anchor--why would they expect a float to be there? A lot of boats do not have good visibility aft. At least here on the East Coast, they just aren't used, and for that matter not needed. I haven't lost an anchor yet.

Re: How to UNset an anchor?

When you put a float with a trip line on your anchor in:

=> East Caribbean: French charter boats pick it up as a mooring
=> West Caribbean: Beep boats pick it up and steal your anchor

^^

If I remember correctly the super yacht that took those anchors later dragged ashore. . . .

I like that idea better than my second idea (floating loop in the end of a conventional but shortened tripline, stiffened across the top)

I say this because your proposal is clearly much easier to grapple: you know which direction to row, and you know how deep to hang the grapple regardless of the height of tide.

Thanks, Jackdale. I think you'd posted this before, and I liked it then too, but I promptly forgot. This time I think (hope!) it'll stick.

Re: How to UNset an anchor?

Except why do you show the "floating" trip line parallel to the bottom? In my experience most floating line will go near vertical, and that could be a real prop hazard in a harbor. If your area has a problem with fouled anchors it is worth it to take a look at the videos of how the Super Sarca anchor slot works.

The floating line is attached to the rode at a point where R is slightly longer that H. I would be tempted to use a bit of tape or some small stuff to attach it at a few more points.

In 30 years (PNW, Caribbean, Bahamas, Turkey) I have never fouled an anchor. But I have had to pull them out of mud using reverse.

And then there's this retrieval system.

Re: How to UNset an anchor?

Easy to retrieve your anchor with ultra short trip line of only 1 foot or so:

+1 Exactly how I do it. With no push button. I sometimes half pull to a short scope and then have breakfast. Gives the anchor time to shimmy up through the mud and the chain to shed some mud.
