Dropping a mooring Ireland

Can anybody tell me the procedure for dropping in your own mooring in Ireland. On the South Eastern coast, berths and existing swinging moorings are very limited. I'd like to spend the summer between Dungarvan and Dunmore east. Dungarvan is shallow but there is space our in cunnigar point which may suit my lifting keel first 210 where other boats are moored.

In Dunmore East they are private or belonged to the Sailing Club. I understand you have to get permission from the harbour master relevant to the Area. Is it just a case of putting one down or is there someone you can hire to help put one down. Also how do locals generally take to someone putting down a mooring in their area. I am from either Dungarvan or Dunmore but I am living in the County.

Any insight would be helpful. Joining the sailing club in either location is no guarantee of a mooring, although I will be joining one. Of them. Dungarvan is closer so would be my preferred area but I also spend 3 to 4 weeks in Dunmore East during the summers.

Re: Dropping a mooring Ireland

The seabed inshore is within the remit of the Dept of the Marine

However this remit is typically delegated to harbour masters , county councils and in certain cases yacht clubs and other bodies

Some are simply historical situations that have never been regularised

So there’s no simple answer. The answer lies in contacting port authority or sailing /yacht clubs in the areas you are interested

These days it’s quite hard , as it’s often dead men’s shoes issue.

Simply arbitrarily dropping a mooring buoy these days could get you into trouble. Sure in out of the way areas it might slip
Under the radar but you’ll have no security.

In dunmore the mooring field is controlled by the yacht club

In dungarvan contact the Dungarvan Harbour Sailing Club
