Plaudits for the yamaha 2hp outboard – mine spent an hour or two underwater when an East Coast Low howled through on tuesday night and flipped my dink. I pulled it apart on the cabin floor at 3am, drained the cyl., sprayed wd40 in cyl and carb air intake, dried and coated everything else and she popped back into life after half a dozen pulls. Seems to be running as good as ever. Simple design, few moving parts, well sealed, cracking little engine.

2 or 4 cycle? I'm assuming 2.

I was running through surf in my dinghy with 3 people in my 8 foot dinghy with my British Seagull wide open when we flipped. Long story short. I had it running again before it turned too dark to see the boat's faint lights at anchor off the West end of Molokai. That was when there was still a Sheraton hotel on the beachfront and we were the talk of the hotel guests. They wouldn't let us in the restaurant with our wet clothes, darn em! Anyway they should have paid us for being their guest's entertainment.

I'm glad there is still a robust little engine out there.

Did the same to my old tohatsu 2.5 2 stroke this summer. Had it running a few hours later.

3 years ago did the same thing to my 3.3 Mercury when the dinghy capsized at Lord Howe Island during an East Coast Low that blew up while we were there. Put the storm boards in and set the motor on these and stripped it down and cleaned out all the water. Still going strong today.

My 9.9 got knocked off the dock by the nephew. After searching for a local diver, which I never found, I had to free dive down 30' to tie on a line to pull it back up. The water is really cold in Vancouver, BC w/o a wet suit.

Just rinsed it off with fresh water and pulled the cord a few times and sprayed it down with WD-40. Attached the fuel line and started it right up. It lasted three more years w/o ill effects, before I sold it.

My 15 hp 4 stroke Yamaha went for a swim earlier this year when the harness clips broke while lowering it onto our tender. I was lucky that my teenage son who was in the tender was able to catch it by the handle and stopped it going to the bottom. Got it going after taking the plug out & turning it over a few times, drowning it in WD40 & changing the oil twice. I haven't had any problems since & it's been 9 months.

Thats encouraging - so far the only person I mentioned this to looked a bit gloomy and said "oh they never go quite right again once they've been under the water..." . The mention of the old seagull brings back fond memories - people used to curse the things as unreliable but they were just more vulnerable to neglect - probably the most misused and abused outbd. ever but mine never let me down once.

that would have been fun sitting one of those out over there, nasty little bastards those E.coast lows. I think thats why they put New Zealand where it is, so we'd have somewhere to get blown to by them...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned flushing the engine with fresh water especially the electronics and wiring

Maybe it's the guys who failed to resuscitate their engines with quick attention that say "they'll never be the same," 'cause our 15 horse Yamaha went for a swim in Port Davey, Jim rinsed with fresh water, oil in cylinders, etc., fired it up. We, too, were advised to sell it 'cause "it'll never be any good again." This was 4 yrs. or so ago. Had to clean the carb a week or so ago, and it is running fine, still.
