Gas can ‘Safety’ spout fix

How many times have you cursed your California Gas safety spout?

Check out the many YouTube videos on how to fix this. I used EZ-Pour from my local Farm & Fleet store. They fit all of my cans including the addition of a breather vent.

I have done a bit more research and found several others. Some offer the feature of reversing the assembly for storage inside the can.

Re: Gas can ‘Safety’ spout fix

Water can nozzles don't have the safety features. Since the can's are the same except for color, they are a direct replacement and easy to find.

That said, I don't like spilling fuel. Because (unlike a car) I have to turn the can completely upside down to fill my boat, some sort of device is needed. Most suck, but a few work ok. I have one that I took apart and removed the overly stiff spring, and I actually like it.

Re: Gas can ‘Safety’ spout fix

Fuel spills with my new CA version of gas can 100% of the time. With my old can, virtually ZERO spills. These new cans are in the top 10 worst invention sof all time as far as I am concerned.

Re: Gas can ‘Safety’ spout fix

I retrofitted several cans on the farm with those kits. (It's not just a spout, also includes the vent fitting.) They do tend to leak a few drops, but not anywhere near as much as the moronic california cans.
Meanwhile, carefully hoarding my last two old pull-out-spout cans.

Just found this at Walmart... going to go pick one up. Looks promising though expensive for the function.

Re: Gas can ‘Safety’ spout fix

The best solution for 5-gallon cans is a shaker siphon. You don't have to hold the can.

For smaller cans, buy one of the newer cans, like Scepter Smartcontrol or Surecan that work. I LOVE my Surecan. I have used it to fill test containers to +/- 5 ml. Never a spill. I can't say that about any old school can.

This one looks very promising.

I think this one lets the spout turn around for storage in the can. Many options for various can types. Three sets going with us to the Caribbean.

My diesel deck ports and the dinghy day tank are three handed messes with the California can.

Think Thinwater said it.

I use a self priming hose that you shake to start. Never a spill and tilt the can to get the last drop.wonderfull.

I don't think anyone likes spilling fuel but the california design requires 4 hands to operate and almost always leaks while pouring.

With the old simple style, almost never leaked.

My work around is a syphon but it doesn't to great for the last gallon as it often sucks air and then stops:

I use an outboard primer bulb with a couple lengths of hose. Even up hill it does not take long to transfer a few gallons.

After learning how to properly use the Scepter SmartControl spout, I've never had a problem with their jerry cans. There's YouTube videos showing how to use it.

And if you ran out of gas in your car, or much worse a YJ Jeep, how the heck would you get it into the filler neck?

I have been using jerry cans for 50+ years. I don’t see the purpose of the California spout? Seems to be a solution in search of a problem.

Since I do not live in California it does not work in my state even after watching the videos.

Back when I bought my first jerry can everyone was able to use one without watching a youtube video!!!!
