I had the same problem with an Alder Barber. I tried the thermostat thing, but found a slightly corroded connection on the compressor unit that allowed 12 volts to pass to the unit until the compressor kicked on. Then the volts dropped to 9.8, well below to 10.5 volt minimum allowed by the controller.

Same here with a danfoss, corroded connections in the switch panel leading to voltage drop at the fridge, a max/min reading multi meter on the fridge terminals lets you know how low it goes.
