Winch Comparisons

I'm in the process of replacing my older Barient ST Winches. With all of the options out there - I'd like to get opinions on best winches for offshore sailing - this would be for both use and maintenance. Thank you for you 2 cents!

Re: Winch Comparisons

What size are your Barients? I'd be interested in 25's if that's what you are replacing.

Re: Winch Comparisons

I have 2 Barient 24 ST / 2 speeds - 1 of them needs a line lead at the self trailer.

Re: Winch Comparisons

To the OP: with respect,
Why get rid of Barients which are the best winches ever made? With minimal maintenance, they are bullet-proof. Yes, they are heavier than light-weight alloy ones, but the internals are way better. You can get most parts from an Australian company. Unless they are severely corroded internally, they can be repaired.
I've got 12 self-tailing Barients on my Alden 46 and wouldn't trade them for any "modern" brands.

Nuku34 - Honestly this is what I'd prefer, and yes the parts are available through Australian Winch Company,.. albeit quite expensive... I am seeking a backup 24ST winch as well for just that reason.

Re: Winch Comparisons

Lewmar springs and pawls typically fit Barient/Barlow winches. (learned that the hard way after ordering them from Australia)

Re: Winch Comparisons

If the recess on the winch where the pawls go are worn out, you can turn it by 90 degree and have a machine shop have mill in two new recesses.
We did that on our mast winch. Works great.

Andersen for manual. They'll outlast you.

I’ve used these on a friend’s boat. Very impressive.

Re: Winch Comparisons

I've had 3 brands on various boats over last 20 years, in order of preference:
1. Andersen

2. Harken

3. Lewmar

Might find that is also the most expensive to least expensive.

I had the same ones on my 1980 dickerson Ketch. Last year West Marine had(stil does this) a 2 for 1 Lewmar sale. Based on the 27's I had, I was able to upgrade them the next size and still save money.

I would wait for that sale again.Yes, they do ship.
