What kind of rig is this?

I saw this in the marina today. What is the curved spar that is attached to the mast? Notice it has it's own track that goes only somewbat above and below the boom.

I think that it is supposed to say RIG. Looks like a different take on a wishbone boom.

It’s a catboat. There is only the curved spar, it is the boom. It’s on the track to allow sail shaping.

Yes, the title was supposed to say rig. I think auto-correct was at work again. Thanks sailmonkey I didn't notice that that the sails were just resting in the lazy jacks.

A catboat is something else. That is not a catboat. It does have a cat ketch rig like a Wyliecat or a Freedom. Cat boats have very wide hull proportions.

The boom is cambered so the sail doesn't touch it.

The boom is shaped that way to avoid contact with the sail, has nothing to do with one tack or another.

Capt. Nat Herreshoff designed the Herreshoff 12 1/2 footer back in 1914. It had three choices of rig, gaff, marconi, and wishboom. He may not have invented the rig but it has certainly been around for more than a century.

The boat is probably a nonsuch. There are two at my club. The wishbone boom never touches the sail, on either tack. The sail is tensioned by the wishbone (as a regular outhaul is) and the wishbone is moved laterally to angle the sail (sheeted in) just as a standard boom. Works just like a windsurfer. The wishbone just has to hold out the clew, if you can do it effectively and strongly with only one side of the wishbone, it's doing its job. But I don't think its called a wishbone in that case. Maybe it is, but I think it is more like a Leg-o-mutton rig which does the same, but without the curve to the sprit. The curve is better methinks.

Since I started this thread I would like to confirm what Thumbs Up said early in this thread. The boat is a Herreshoff 38 cat ketch. It's not a cat boat nor a Nonsuch. I checked Sailboat Data after Thumbs Up's identification. That's the boat sitting in the marina. Main and missen, notably with no supporting rigging.
I haven't met the people who own it. Anyway it's a very interesting boat.
