Selden in Mast Furler Problem

My Bavaria 42 (year 2000) is fitted with a Selden in mast furler model RB Mk 11.

The mainsail is not currently fitted.

For some reason the halyard swivel, which is now at the bottom, will not slide upwards more than about 250 mm where it comes to a dead stop!

Is there something not aligning with the foil luff groove or does anyone know what the problem might be.

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

Most likely the white plastic foil cover , the furler is a 2 part section,, check the plastic for damage....

Hi Neilpride
Is the white plastic foil cover part of the halyard furler mechanism or part of the foil?
Thanks
Pat

Is it possible that it is just the splice at the eye in the halyard jamming in the track (opening in the front of the mast)? I had this problem when I up sized the halyard on the main a few years ago.

Re: Selden in Mast Furler Problem

Selden use wire spliced to the rope, for the obvious reasons, the plastic foil cover is just a cover to help the swivel go up and down smooth and to close the gap between the swivel and the foil since the tolerance is great, is easy to damage the plastic if the swivel jam up or down and you try hard to free the swivel, and bad news to any owner of a selden in mast furling since to replace the cover and the furler you need to unstep the rig, they come free by the mast head, and the last 2 plastic covers we replace in the past we get a hard time to found it in stock by Selden. Cheers.

Exactly. This is typical. The top swivel has to be loose -- not under tension, and has to be wiggled by hand to get it over the foil cover joint.

In some of them -- like mine -- you also have to get it over another joint mid-mast. Don't ask how I know this . If there is any bend in the mast or tension on the halyard, it won't go.

Yep, seems the bad foil point is at the midle where the 2 joints are spliced..

Re: Selden in Mast Furler Problem

Hi and thanks for the responses re my furler. And deep apologies for not responding earlier.

This is what happened.

At the end of the last cruising season, September last year, I inadvertently let my halyard swivel drop heavily to boom height where of course it stopped. It so happens the ID of the swivel part is almost exactly the same as the OD of the short Locking tube that surrounds the tensioner at the bottom of the foil.

The latter became jammed inside the swivel and it all appeared to be one unit. Especially when I looked at it again this year. With the help of friends we did discover that the parts should be separated. This was done but with difficulty, they were really stuck !

But then the locking tube would not slide down to it's proper position over the tensioning screw. More force required !

But now all is good.
