Seawind Cat Main Traveller Friction

The main sheet traveller system on the Seawind 1160 (and other variation) cat involves a 'line runner' type winch, a few dead eyes and 2:1 purchase via blocks across to the traveller car.

Ours is very stiff and difficult to winch, even with sail down and no load, never mind when deciding to let the traveller out a bit when sailing more downwind.

Any advice from those who have this issue with their Seawind, and what did you do to reduce the friction?

I read a good idea from someone with a Seawind 1160 on Multihulls4us forum. They replaced the old 10 mm braided traveller line with 8 mm spectra/dyneema line, which made it far smoother; this makes sense. Sounds like a winner to me, but just wanted to see if there are other things I should be considering? Obviously I need to remove the line and check traveller for free movement as well as winch.

Re: Seawind Cat Main Traveller Friction

Giving everything a good cleaning never hurts boat hardware, & often makes a big difference. Especially for things like blocks & traveler cars (track too). And in the process of cleaning things, you may find that it's time for new bearings, & or, new blocks.

Re: Seawind Cat Main Traveller Friction

Update: Had a good look at the system on the weekend and application of lube to the track car and a couple of pulleys made it far, far better. Will see how it goes when under sail and loaded then decide if the spectra (slippery) line idea is still needed.

Unfortunately one of the screws securing a block to the track car has sheared, so there's a fun job to ezy-out the screw stub and replace it. Grrrrr...
