If this help , we remove the other day a mast from a lagoon 44 in almost 2 hours, and 150 $ hour seems ok to me, we charge 80 euros Hour for the crane, get a decent crane and prepare the mast to be lifted in 30 minutes and done, huge saving....5 hours is insane!!!

If they were down south it would take 10 or more hrs "to do it proper" ! (after that NYer jab ,a little self deprecating may be in order.. ha ha)..I can lower and raise my mast in very short order by pulling it up close to a "balconey/high place" that the marina has for the purpose..I have seen a place in Jamaica that does the same thing using an over hanging cliff..have heard talk about using two sailboats on either side of the mast to be pulled and rigging thru the winches..

I should talk to my neighbor guy with the spruce mast, see if a mobile crane can step his and unstep mine, we could split the fee by mast weight. He's super fussy though.

Somehow with charging for time en route, and traffic delays, I am not optimistic unless a crane can combine jobs. There is a full service marina across the canal. I see this will take more than two phone calls.

The NY metro area has it's own unique issues with work like this. Mostly it's pricey unless you can hire Mexicans.

I do not believe that the proper way is to tie a line at spreaders , no Sir ! We tied a loop just above the spreaders and let the line cleanly down the mast and wrapped on a halyard winch and cleat . They are designed with the necessary strengths . Place loop and crane hook on the rear so as not to damage sail track ! If you rigged it correct the crane will take tension and a few cranks on halyard winch will lift it enough to remove wires and junk that is connected to base .
Using this method we have removed masts by hanging on bridges in out of the way places where the Law was not watching !

Most often I've seen them rigged just below the spreaders. But it's really a matter of center of gravity. The tag line to the winch etc is often used also

Anyhow, I called a couple of crane companies, and got a quote. Sadly I will lose some money paying for the drive to the marina in NJ traffic. I was careful to explain that the boat is on land, on supports, and as pistarckle noted, there's a possibility of the mast base getting stuck (thanks again for pointing that out).

Now at a last Marina I was at a few years ago, the owner insisted I hire his mon... I mean rigging experts. Thus I don't recall the assembly at the base. No bolts or pins though right? (deck stepped 1989 Catalina 30). Thus, once the shrouds are free, it's just a matter of the crane pulling up, me cutting wires inside the tube, and then letting the rigger / crane operator do his thing(?)

As an aside: when I asked about the yard contractor surcharge, the marina owner said he never encountered someone hiring an outside crane. Well, my situation is unique insofar as I did not pull the mast when the boat was coming out, and with family illness I never splashed, thus no opportunity to pull it with the travelift.

Still at that yard there's one guy building a steel hulled 40 footer and another gentleman taking apart what was a beautiful 43 footer. I really am surprised nobody ever had to hire a crane, ever. I hope I am using this time constructively. I will not be running my VHF coax through the bilge, that's for sure.

Why? LHM has no service dept to speak of, so they can't rip me of there, and I hear no complaints from neighbors. All marinas have some sleazy aspects, though I see nothing extraordinary here. this is my third year dealing with them. What experience do you have to share?
