Most phenolics are made the same with high heat and high pressure, CE is cotton layers and synthetic resins, G10 is glass layers and epoxy resin. I can see why G10 is preferred because you bonding very similar materials. The CE you have probably seen before as it was used for sheaves for wire to rope halyards.

At my work, FR4 or G10 is preferred over phenolic for plate material that needs to hold up or remain flat in hot and humid environments. Granted, we are not running large bolts through them or coating them with resin either. I do remember some old cam cleats from a boat that may have been phenolic, they were aged brown and one could see some 'weave' on them.

Yeah the weave is a good indicator. I've seen gears made before, strong stuff. Lots of different grades, some lower grades have paper and resin.
