Lifelines open vs closed turnbuckles

About to make a purchase and wondering if there is a benefit of open vs closed. Also I see Hayn has a lifeline series, is that any different then their others or is it just a rebranding?

It appears as though all the turnbuckles on Amazon have lessor strength rating like 1000 lb vs 3000lb when one finds this info. Which brands are most hd reliable for blue water? I already have my 3/16 316 cable and Hayn crimp studs to ¼-28 inch threads..

Closed turnbuckle barrels don’t allow you to determine if a sufficient number of threads are engaged. With an open turnbuckle body there is no question.
My personal preference is C.S. Johnson or Hayn products. My lifelines are 1X19 rigging wire, uncoated.

Open turnbuckles everywhere.
The closed barrel ones are the devil's invention.

Re: Lifelines open vs closed turnbuckles

We set up our lifelines with lashings at the ends instead of turnbuckles. This allows you to cut the lifeline in an emergency so it goes slack. This might enable getting a MOB victim aboard more quickly, or make it easier to secure a fallen spar to the deck instead of having it bounce around, causing the stanchions to all rip out.

Re: Lifelines open vs closed turnbuckles

I much prefer open body turnbuckles, not only are they easy to visually reference for sufficient thread bury, they also don't hold water.
On top of that, they are generally chrome plated bronze, so minimal risk of threads galling compared to stainless on stainless.
We mostly use Blue Wave components in our shop.
