Inmast furling slap

I'm still new to inmast furling and must say I'm not sold on the idea yet.
The sail furled up tends to slap the inside of the mast at anchor when there anything but calm. Is this normal? Solutions?
Treat me like I'm idiot when it comes to inmast furling, because I am.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure you are actually hearing the furled sail slap as that would be slapping the inside with a long pillow. You could pull the sail out on a calm day and check your tension on the rig but I am thinking there has to be a loose cable or halyard in the mast. I see you have a C47 so maybe check a Catalina owners site? Good luck with it

It does not slap on Amels nor on new Selden masts. If it slaps, it must be an old unit or something sub standard.

Once the sail is furled, you slightly tension the outhaul and this pulls the sail / foil towards the aft portion of the tunnel. This stop all and any slapping.

Cheers,

Re: Inmast furling slap

Hi, its a sparcraft rig on a Catalina 470. The outhaul does pull the sail forward but obviously the sail wound up tapers as it goes up the mast, so from about 2/3rds up the sail will swing at hit the inside of the mast. Halyard tension helps but its stil there.

When you profile is designed like this:

then there is no slapping.

And when the furled sail is free to wag inside the whole open mast ... then ask the designer why they saved on a decent alloy mast extrusion (short answer - because these are only made in Europe).

You will have to improvize, likely placing something inside the mast to limit the free space. Possibly a PCV tube.
