IDENTIFY - "Z" Logo on Standing Rigging Turnbuckle

Hey All,

I've been searching the internet for hours but no luck. This turnbuckle comes from a 2017 Jeanneau 54. Can anyone identify this "Z" logo?

Thanks in advance!

No, but likely either one of these two. Just contact them:

or:

http://www.z-spars.com/index-en.html

Btw, usually it's not a problem to replace by another make or model of the same dimensions.

Hi Franziska,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did find Z-pars UK online and also the French Z-Spars, but it does not look at first glance that either makes turnbuckles.

I actually want to replace those turnbuckle bodies with closed ones, but I first wanted the specs on the old ones. Especially the threads.

I've determined the thread size/pitch on one turnbuckle, but another one still doesn't seem to match standard metric thread size/pitch.

Cheers

Noooooo! Closed turnbuckle bodies are of the devil, don’t do that!

Why would that be? I just saw them on a number of new boats at the boat show">Annapolis Boat Show, including the Swan 48.

Jedi is 100% correct, NO closed-body turnbuckles, not now, not ever.
Closed bodies are cheap, easily made on a lathe from bar stock, whereas the open bodies are started from a forging, (better be bronze).
The old response was that with a closed body you never really knew how much thread was left inside.
While that is true, the main reason to never use them is that they hold water internally on the lower half.
The water evaporates, leaves the salt, and the thread interface is being constantly attacked by a high concentrate chloride environment, (one of the worst environments for stainless).
For longevity and peace-of-mind only open body turnbuckles of forged bronze should ever be used.
Sorry Swan, you should know better.
And all-stainless turnbuckles? best used as fishing sinkers.

Re: IDENTIFY - "Z" Logo on Standing Rigging Turnbuckle

This turned interesting.
My expeience..I replaced lifelines and used closed turnbuckles.
Open ones use cotter pins/rings so there's really no way for that adjustment to ever change.
Closed ones use nuts. If one end only were to ever loosen, the turnbuckle could easily spin.
Yes, I thought I had really tightend the turnbuckle nuts on the lifelines but during my summer transpac, 5100nm total. I had one lifeline nearly come apart before I really took note of a loose looking section.
Maybe that can be an issue??

Why not just call Jeanneau? They are still in business and this is a 7 year old boat.

Thanks! That's really useful. I still don't really have the hang of searching this forum. Seems like I can never find specific things, even though they are there.
