DIY replace headstay in FURLEX furler without buying stay from Selden - possible?

Hi,

I have done headstay replacements in other furling systems (profurl etc). No big deal - BUT Furlex has a special fitting ON THE WIRE ITSELF its just a bit of machined plastic at the top of the stay under the swage that rotates (a bushing) that is held from sliding down the wire by a copper crimp. This seems like a bit of a scam on Selden's part to force you to buy your wire from them ( at a TRIPLE markup over a normal rigging shop). So. Has anyone done a DIY replacement WITHOUT ordering the wire from Selden.
How did you do it. Did you omit the top bush or did you nicopress on the crimp yourself.
