Booster sail

Umm, got a boat with some sails in bags. One sail bag says “booster”. The boat is a Crealock 37 cutter.
I search for the word “booster” and get WiFi boosters only.
Anyone got an idea?

Re: Booster sail

I’m afraid you’ll have to take it out of the bag and let us know what you find....could be a colloquial term.

Re: Booster sail

Never heard of a booster, but found this...

Quote:
asymmetric spinnaker sport catamaran

The brand new sensation for light wind areas! This foresail gives the HAPPY CAT a significant boost in weak wind conditions. The Furling-Booster can be used in light winds instead of the jib and performs about 30% higher speeds than the standard jib. In addition, the Booster can also be sailed well at the wind.

The easy handling makes the Furling-Booster especially attractive. Instead of the forestay, a separate endless furling drum is attached to the bowsprit. The Booster can be rolled in and out easily. In the luff of the sailcloth a torsion-free rope is integrated, which also allows a good tensioning of the booster luff. The sail cut is slightly flatter than a Gennaker in order to be able to sail a course up to approx. 55° at the apparent wind (tacking angle approx. 110°).

Re: Booster sail

If it's a ketch (not sure if a Crealock Alajuela is like an Ingrid Alajuela), it might be a mizzen staysail, or it might be a sort of fisherman's staysail that's rigged between both masts.

If the rest of the optimistic report on the "booster" is as accurate as this statement, I'd not pay too much attention to it!

Trade names for sails are kinda misleading... I at one time had one called a "flasher", bt it never ran around nekkid!

I suspect that it might be a furling light air sail, despite all the above!

Sure it's not a "Whomper"?

(Ref: Wind - cheesy but entertaining sailing movie starring Jennifer Grey & Matthew Modine)

Re: Booster sail

My guess is drifter. What does the winner get?

Wind wasn’t that cheesy.

Another rom/com made to much the sane formula was Cutting Edge with Moira Kelly and DB Sweeney.

No Whomper, but a Pamchenko paired ice move.

Re: Booster sail

I too would guess that a booster would be perhaps a word for a drifter.

Last week I learned that some US sailmakers call a drifter a Code 0. Which was new to me too. There seems to be little coherence on which name is applied and how.

Hoist it on a calm day. Send us some snaps.

Re: Booster sail

Many sails I've removed from bags aren't in the right bag anyway and it's a raffle what sail you might find. Who are these anally retentive people that put sails back in their correct bags? None of my crew would be smart enough to do that.

I buy used sails AND used sail bags. I am not smart enough to figure out what sails I have!
