Anyone know a good step by step rigging book

I just got a new sailboat. It's my first Yawl and first self tending jib. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good book that can walk me thru setting up all the rigging properly.

Re: Anyone know a good step by step rigging book

Brion Toss is a world class rigger. He has a website with a message board you should create an account on and look around on what's posted. You can also ask questions and depending on whose online you may get a reply. Brion sometimes answers.
SparTalk - Powered by vBulletin

He also gives rigging seminars at his business in Port Townsend, Washington and he used to hit some of the boat shows as well. Probably a calendar with this information somewhere on his website

I tend to agree with this review. It's a great reference book and I recommend putting it in your library but it has its limitations.

Review of The Complete Rigger's Apprentice by Brion Toss

Great info, but becoming dated

This book is a wealth of information, but I finished it somewhat disappointed. Some sections of the book are quite irrelevant to modern sailboats - Brion has done a lot of rigging work on schooners, gaff rigs, barques, etc - but the vast majority of sailors these days do not have rope standing rigging. Mention of recent Spectra standing rigging techniques have been added to this update, but not in any detail.

The basics of rod rigging are covered, but very little detail beyond the characteristics of rod vs wire (ex, no diagrams of the various tang iterations from the two major manufacturers).

Nearly half the book - several hundred pages - focuses on rope techniques: knots, splices, running rigging, "service", and a chapter on magic tricks. Knots are important, but they are a simple matter compared to standing rigging, and many other books already do a decent job on them.

The best use of this book is for understanding the theory and principles of rigging design. He did a great job teaching how the loads on a mast distribute, how the spreaders work as compression members, etc.

Understanding Rigs and Rigging by Richard Henderson (Author) and Ted Brewer,

dated also (1990) but more modern then The Rigger's Apprentice.

I find myself using it more. Wish they would update and add better formulas and tables.

Re: Anyone know a good step by step rigging book

I have the Brian Toss "Riggers Apprentice" and "Sailmakers Apprentice" and there is not enough information on modern masthead rigs to justify the cost of the books. If I had a gaff rigged pilot cutter the book would be worth its weight in gold, but I have aluminum spars and 1 by 19 rigging that I dont intend to hand splice, so it has limited use for me. Great books, but not for the average cruiser. Just my opinion. ____Grant.

Re: Anyone know a good step by step rigging book

Do read Selden's rigging advice booklet. Available in 7 languages free pdf on Selden's website. It is a great source of first hand advice.

Five stars.

Re: Anyone know a good step by step rigging book

Kentobin,

Toss just updated his book I think in December.

The one book you find on every riggers shelf is "the complete riggers apprentice". It is the foundation on which everything else adds.
