Under sink water filtration system

Hello experience sailors. I am looking for recommendations for under sink filtration system. I am hoping to learn through your experience before going on Amazon to browse for products. What is a popular brand with good cost efficient filters that will make my wife and daughter happy drinking or filling up bottles to put in the refrigerator while long term cruising? Thanks!

Re: Under sink water filtration system

I'm interested in what other folks are using too. We have a 30 year old activated charcoal filter that is very similar to a "Seagull" but ours is no longer manufactured. Our boat has a pressurized water system and we change the filter every six months or when the flow is low. Water always tastes great and never had a problem. The drawback was the filter system was really expensive. I'm dreading having to do it all again.

My research from years ago showed that filtered water was very important when you travel. You can get "good" water that can upset your system. I think it is also important to clean or disinfect your tanks. We would get water from all kinds of sources but would taste the water before putting it in our tanks. You will also want to have a lot of spare filters, they are sometimes difficult to get. I was going to replace our water filter system in the Netherlands and couldn't find anything. They wondered why I would want to filter their perfectly good water.

The highest filter standard is currently ANSI Standard 53. I believe the Seagull meets this but there are now many others. I use a Pentek FloPlus that meets the 53 standard, lasts much longer than the Seagull and is much less expensive. It uses the standard 10” housing available at Home Depot and many other places.

Same as Carl's: we use a standard dual-canister home style housing with a basic physical filter, then a quality carbon filter. Always drink from our tank. No issues so far.

No worries, just drink the water, what could go wrong.

Re: Under sink water filtration system

Standard 10" plastic filter canister with 1.0 micron or 0.5 micron carbon filter element.

But it does not take out the taste which we don't like of some water.

However, as soon as someone starts talking about what is best, what's the best brand etc, I run the other way.

Buy simple, buy cheap, buy cost effective, and don't ask others "What is best"?"

Ditto here...I see no reason to buy some elaborate stainless steel unit that is expensive with housing and filters alike. I use a whole house unit. The one I have now is the harder tubing push connections which was a bit of a pain to adapt to 1/2" vinyl reinforced hose supply. My earlier one, on a previous boat was all NPT and was much easier and IMHO stronger.

Re: Under sink water filtration system

Where are you sourcing your water, and what are your goals from filtration?
The 10" cartridge is probably fine.

In Australia we use these

Seem to work. Change every 6 months or 4600litres of water used.

Buy one the locals buy so you can get filters.

Mind are the blue plastic duo versions , good value and effective.

Re: Under sink water filtration system

do you have a watermaker ? if so, you really don't need any further filtration...

cheers,

Good idea to take vitamin supplements though.

Re: Under sink water filtration system

We run all water through one of the larger Camco inline filters before it goes into the tank. That keeps any significant sediment out of the tank. Because it strips at least some of the chlorine, we add a little bleach to the tank to maintain a small chlorine residual.

We do drink our tank water, but all of our onboard water gets filtered. Filters are a 1 micron sediment filter (Pentek DGD-2501), followed by a KDF and granular carbon filter (Pentek DBC10-EX2), then one of the 0.5 micron Floplus carbon blocks (Floplus-10BB). These filters are all 4.5x10. There's enough carbon contact with those filters (assuming only 1 sink in use while filling something with water to drink) that we've yet to have any water not taste good coming out of the tap since installing the filters.

Ditto.

We also use a Pentek DGD2501 (25 micron/1 micron) sediment filter as primary when filling our tanks.

And then we use a Brita or Pur filter pitcher (whichever fits better) for cold water in the fridge and for coffee water.
