Raritan Electro Scan Hold-and-Treat Systems

I've had Raritin Lecta-san, the newer electroscan, and on my latest boat I have the Raritan Hold n treat with a purasan as te treatment component.

I a 100% sold on treating waste!

The hold n treat I installed includes a small (15 gallon) holding tank tied to a purasan treatment system. The holding tank is for when I'm in a NDZ.

Went with the Purasan because the heads on our boat are freshwater vaccuflush units.

While the discharge or not debate will rage on forever, there is no debate that these devices are effective at reducing a boaters interaction with human waste. Just flush the head and its gone forever!

Well just remember the stuff that goes ovbd looks just as bad as anything could. It may be sterile but it does not look like it. I find it kinda embarrassing when somebody comes up in their dink and you have just turned the tropical waters brown. The fish don't seem to care though. Also the electronic plates inside need replacing every once and a while and they cost a lot.

According to the EPA web site, as of about a year ago the entire California coast is now an NDZ. In the northeast where we are, most harbors are NDZs. As a result, an electrosan is unusable unless coupled with a holding tank since even treated waste cannot be discharged in an NDZ. And if you have to have a holding tank anyway, why bother with the electrosan? Maybe I'm missing something, but unless you are in an area where you can always poop, process, and pump and can go completely without a holding tank, then I don't understand the value of an electrosan. Maybe someone can help me better understand this?

Actually that prohibition only exists for vessels 300 tons or greater. Most harbors are NDZs.

The value of these specialized units is that they can be discharged closer to shore than the 3 mile limit for untreated sewage. So if you are coastal sailing it is a plus. Also no pump out hassles.

But do I also understand it correctly that if you do find yourself in an NDZ, everyone has to hold it?

Yup. Also these units are much better for the enviroment.

Got it, thanks. I can see how in some areas the benefits outweigh the downside, but where we are it's a non-starter given all the NDZs.

Just my opinion but, I would rather have a large holding tank and pass on treatment. It seems like a feel good measure for those who use them, and I bet many users dont strictly adhear to NDZs, assuming that is better for the enviorment. It may have been pretty great new age tech 25 years ago, but not so much now.

Yes, these are so called "feel good" waters made into no discharge zones after strong lobbying by environmental radicals.

Cleaner waters would be better served by authorizing on-board waste processing than by fiat. The bull crap that one only needs to go 3 miles off shore is just that at least here in southern Massachusetts where the three mile line begins 15 miles or so at our off shore islands.

Of course, shore line communities continue to ignore the laws boater's are asked to comply with.
