remove the air valve assembly. try pumping. if it pumps freely then it's most likely the valve. sorry i can't remember which way the thing assembles, but try it both ways. personally i would just buy a new one - don't need it to fail when you're in the boonies somewhere and can't get a replacement.

If it "pumps freely" with the valve out, I am gonna have one big mess, no? The assembly goes into a pretty big hole in the side of the pump assembly.

My idea is to back out the nut til the pump pumps freely or starts leaking. Hopefully the former happens before the latter.
