how to turn on heating on my bavaria

Just purchased a 2003 49 bavaria. First large sailboat we have owned. No idea how to get heat on in the boat. It has a reverse heating/air system. Can anyone chime in with help on this? Much appreciated as we are staying at a hotel until we figure out how to get heat on.

Thanking you in advance.

You'll have to provide more (any...!) detail on the type and make of heater. Photo(s) would help.

Ask Logan, the dock master. He owns a cruising sailboat and knows his way around boats.

Surprised you didn't get a walk through/startup instructional introduction when you closed the deal.
It's really a required item when purchasing.
So your not left sleeping in a hotel room for lack of knowledge about systems in your vessel.
Well, learn and go.
Congrats on your purchase.

Re: how to turn on heating on my bavaria

Well, to be fair (cue Letterkenny), perhaps getting a good walkthrough might have been difficult, especially with Covid-19 and travel restrictions.

We bought our boat sometime after the owner had died (well, the husband...). The heating, fuel lines and some electrics were pretty complicated. There were diagrams left, but they were complicated and not up-to-date.

We learned by jumping in and figuring (most of... [emoji848]) it out. (And changing/upgrading some.)

Funny (to us) incident: first time we used our Dickinson Antarctic diesel heater at anchor, we were shocked to find the water heater very hot. Freaking out, thinking we must be killing our batteries running the electric water heater, we finally figured out the dual-coil inside the Dickinson is a great and fast way to heat water.

Re: how to turn on heating on my bavaria

Some have a "heat/cool" switch at the control panel.

On my (OLD) boat, both heat and cooling selection are controlled entirely by the thermostat:

The thermostat has two independent sets of internal switches.

You set the desired cabin temperature and when the cabin temp rises above this set temperature, the first set of switch contacts closes and turns on the compressor to cool.

When the temperature drops below the set temperature, the second set of switch contacts closes. The compressor again kicks in, however this set of switch contacts also actuates the reversing valve in the AC to run it in reverse (heat) cycle.

Not the best way to do it in my opinion, but I guess it is set up for idiots. I would rather be able to decide if I want cooling or heating.

(Even home thermostats have a "heat" / "cool" selector switch...)

Cheers

Get the manual for the A/C system. Since you have a relatively modern boat it might have a digital thermostat/control panel with a programming mode (no manual switches). As an example see the Dometic Marine Air System (as I have in my Hunter): https://www.marlow-hunter.com/wp-con...20Controls.pdf

In the manual for the A/C unit itself, I see this (page 4) if you have this type of A/C: "This a/c unit can effectively cool your boat in water temperatures up to 90°F and heat in water temperatures as low as 40°F. So if you are located in colder climate where sea water gets down to freezing you might want to consider an alternative heating source. On page 12:
"Fault: Water coil is iced in the heating mode.
1. Seawater temperature is below 40°F.
Shut down system to prevent damage to condenser.
Allow coil to defrost."

https://www.tropicalmarineairconditi...orComptMAN.pdf

What other manuals for the systems in your boat are you missing?

Re: how to turn on heating on my bavaria

thank you, everyone. we found a captain "Mike" here at the marina and he got everythng running for us, had to clear the lines. He was awesome! You all are. Bob will be staying on the boat starting tomorrow. I'll fly back home tuesday to get our house ready to list. Then we will meet in Florida a few weeks from now. We are no longer "wannabees".
