Re: Disposing of Solid Waste From a Dessicating Toilet

I just got a revelation

We also have coco coir blocks, that we use for our hydroponics garden. We use a nutrient solution but I think you guys can use the contents of the toilet and water from the urine bottles instead of nutrient solution!

Afterwards you can just toss it overboard because all the nitrogen is now inside the veggies that you harvested and by eating them you complete the circle

Also, the instructions you got for breaking up the blocks: that’s exactly what I do with water in a 5 gallon bucket, but why didn’t you guys think of using urine instead of water?!

Maybe someone who posted to just toss the block in the toilet was right, except instead of collecting pee in bottles, you just pee in the toilet and that stirring device () you have breaks it up automatically!

No way don't do that with the urine. Separation is heat stops the stink. Much urine in the solids and it will stink real bad.

You mean they don’t stink otherwise? Okay, I can see how it stinks worse, I didn’t think of that

But you can use it to water the garden so that you don’t need nutrient solution!

Remember the movie Waterworld? He pees on the plant

That is correct urine is full of nutrients that help things grow .

In that book they don’t stirr the poop and they don’t bottle the urine. They just cover it up. They also don’t bag anything, they empty it on a compost heap while keeping their noses closed, then wash the bucket while keeping noses closed.

Also, they throw in food scraps and diapers!

Exactly right. A primary function of these heads is separation. The reason wet heads stink is because everything gets combined, creating a smelly, toxic slurry. It’s why problems with standard marine heads can be so miserable.

Separation and desiccation are the two keys to how these heads work. So don’t pee in your peat (or coir).

Yes, it gets tedious. I really don’t mind answering the same questions if they are honestly asked. It only gets annoying when dealing with people who clearly have no interest in learning.

Thinwater I thought composters would have a she wee on a bottle next to the bucket and coke bottle.
A 12 volt computer fan is also the secret to our compost toilet being odourless.
Cheers

I can see it now. Queasy female guest hovering over the she wee.

With a proper wet toilet you can keep using it on the hard, why not?
Bull...!

You can just empty the 30l liquid tank into the yard toilet. The advantage is you get to use your own toilet and not a dirty & smelly yard toilet.
Makes nighttime interruptions easier too :-)

Regarding the wet toilet, you need to get the flushing water and how do you empty those holding tanks (a lot more liquid than on our separating toilet).
Hardstands usually do not have a pump out spot where you can pull up too...

And spray a bit of vinegar into the wet drain every time you use it, then it does not stink.

Btw. we just use wood saw/plane chipps in the hard part works fine and is easier to get than cocos peat over here.
Alternatively cat litter would work but it's heavy and more expensive.

Using a DIY seperating toilet now for two years, no smell & no blocked toilets either.

Boats which traveled with us and had more conventional pump or vacuum systems regularly had to repair stuff or deblock it...

Re: Disposing of Solid Waste From a Dessicating Toilet

One for the squeamish:

NASA is recycling 98 percent of astronaut pee and sweat on the ISS into drinkable water

https://www.engadget.com/nasa-is-rec...184332789.html

Also a question for people. I went about a year with a desiccating head. I think that’s about how long. This was during the height of Covid, so we never got sick. Although my ex was having some reactions to a medication withdrawal and she got sick a bunch of times.

She used a 5 gallon bucket for that. I would just rinse it outside overboard.

Actually seems nicer to use a fresh 5 gallon bucket for that then a toilet bowl in my opinion.

What is your opinion about getting sick like that with a desiccating head?

How do you haul a 30 liter tank to the yard toilet and do they even allow that?!

The wet toilet, you simply use it and flush. It flushes with fresh water but even when you have a salt water flush toilet, you can simply use the shower head to use fresh water instead.
If your holding tanks gets full before you launch, then it is too small.
