Every boat I have chartered as always had a hand driven diaphargm blige pump.

All has at least to electric pumps, usually one big one on top and one little on below.

Re: Bilge pump recommendations

This thread is old, but I noticed it had a few people on it mention Attwood bilge pumps. I got a 500 GPH Attwood pump with an integrated float switch for my boat. I love it! Does the job perfectly. I even documented the installation on my blog:

Re: Bilge pump recommendations

A salutory tale!
I use Whale pumps way above the water line with vacuum type float switches, in order to remove all electrical parts from immersion. This has worked well on two boats now, but this summer I woke to find my feet wet as I exited my berth. The reason was a blown hose on a newly fitted fridge compressor (professionally done, ie I paid someone to do it!) The bilge pump should have coped, but I had recently fitted bilge water filters to be ecologically sound, and these had clogged, causing the fuse on the pump to blow. An expensive lesson in being a good citizen. Of course I should have had a bilge alarm, and I now do have one, but a little too late!

Re: Bilge pump recommendations

Wow! Those are some crazy stories!

At first, I thought I would need a bigger pump than a 500 GPH, but I haven't had any issues.

The Rock n Row has 6 water-tight bulkheads. I've contemplated putting a bilge in each compartment, but that seems like way too much overkill, not to mention an expensive routing nightmare. Only a couple of the chambers have thru-hulls.
