Re: A/C reversing valve

I would suggest that you read this info dealing with troubleshooting reversing valves

http://www.rses.org/assets/serviceap...ual/620-87.pdf

Replacement valve should be max $125 and 2 hrs labor if the unit is on the bench. Be sure to go to someplace that is qualified, the brazing requires a skilled touch!

Re: A/C reversing valve

Any home HVAC should be able to handle this no problem. My 16k btu Marine Air had 2 leaking shrader valves. I removed the unit to make a new pan from SS and removed the recharge caps for no reason, and noticed both valves would leak right away with the caps loosened. Just 3 weeks ago, I wired in a cord with a 110Vac plug to the control box, and installed a hose with a garden hose end on it and took it to my local HVAC business. All they had to do was plug it in and attach a hose. Replaced both valve stems, pulled a vacuum on it for 8 hrs to check for leaks, and then recharged (R22). $100 even.

Re: A/C reversing valve

The main problem here would be the size of the tubing. It may be too small to cut and solder in another reversing valve. The unit may have an auto-defrost cycle, so if you just leave it running in cool mode it will not be able to defrost the coils. How old is the unit? I have worked with A/C techs who regularly changed out reversing valves but not on smaller units such as this. Good luck.

Re: A/C reversing valve

Changing the reversing valve will not be a problem. The unit has 9 Great Lakes seasons on it. I am wondering, if removing the reversing valve altogether and have the unit just cool would be an option.

You need to look in the owners manual and see if it says anything about a "defrost" option. Modern small package units such as those in fridges, freezers, and window A/C's etc can automatically reverse cycle to melt ice off the evaporator coils. If it has a defrost cycle you may be able to delete the option. Personally, if I were going to the trouble of removing the valve and resealing the unit I would replace the valve. Specialists have a tendency to markup parts 200-400%.
